Many new coffee shop owners don't understand the importance of good flow and design. This is a major cause of coffee shop failure.
When it comes to design people often go way over the top or they don’t recognize the importance at all. Many new owners do not realize that ambiance and functionality are the two most critical aspects of the design. When you create a concept and the design does not achieve it, or create a design that people cannot easily navigate through, it is a problem.
Equipment is equipment and many new owners forget that it not only needs to be functional it needs to be attractive. There is nothing worse then a big espresso machine that is an eye sore. New owners often take the menu design for granted and they end up being boring, long and confusing. A menu is one of your best marketing tools. People underestimate the relationship between design and profit. It is not just about color coordination. Do you know how to create effective customer flow? Do you know the best set up for staff efficiency?
The bottom line is your décor needs to reflect your concept. It needs to incorporate originality and attract your local demographic. You don’t want coffee to be your secondary product; you want coffee to make up at least 50% of your profits. Success is achieved by not implementing a “full menu”, but bringing in an offering of specific and purposeful items that compliment coffee. Both customers and staff need to feel attracted to the space and be able to walk around in a way that makes sense. The equipment that you buy has to compliment the décor of the space and be functional. It is about giving your coffee shop a design concept that takes everything into account.
