Many people wonder if they should get involved with a coffee shop franchise, or start their own independent coffee business.

There really isn’t a right or wrong answer. It really depends on the individuals situation, business background and their expectations for their business venture.

There are franchisees who’ve failed and lost a lot of money in their coffee shop business. And many have profited. There are independent coffee shops that have failed miserably, and there are independent operators who’ve become wealthy.

There are a lot more considerations when it comes to deciding upon YOUR ideal coffee shop operation. There is a ton of information and decisions that must be made, and just as much “inside information” you need to learn before you will be truly prepared to make an informed decision.

The truth is that getting into your own coffee shop business is the easy part. Keeping it open and operating it profitably is the hard part.

How can I find someone who may have just graduated from Culinary School whose looking for an opportunity?

I am opening up a coffee franchise in the Long Grove area in Illinois around October this year and I am looking for someone who may have just graduated culinary school that would like the opportunity to sell their bakery items – I am even looking for sandwiches and salads that could be delivered to my shop. I would also advertise for them, they can have menus, or cards that we can hand out. I am looking for breakfast items also include some healthy , low fat versions, and some lunch options, such as salads and creative sandwiches – etc.
I think its a great opportunity for someone who is just getting started just as I am.

I am a student at the California Culinary Academy/Cordon Bleu in San Francisco, I work in the career center, we have students from all over the U.S. I would call 1-800-BayChef, and ask to speak to Lisa Wilson, she can put your add in our weekly job listing site, I know there are quite a lot of people graduating that would love an opportunity like this. expanding a small business?

Thanks all of you who wrote and gave me some great pointers.
This is a bakery/coffee shop. A family member wants to open the 2nd location with their capital. What kind of contract do we draw up and how do we keep our good relationship within the family while still trying to make both locations successful. I would like to start a franchise if that made sense.

I agree with justwondering…This needs to be carefully drafted in a legal agreement, but a franchise structure is not warranted at this time. Additionally, you should be cautious about involving friends and family as business partners. Even the most iron-clad agreement won’t put your relationship back together if things go sour. You can expect trouble if the business does extremely well (people get greedy) or very poorly (people point fingers).

does anyone out there own a java’s brewin shop?

my friend is in the process of buying a franchise of java’s brewin’. i dont think that’s a great business because there main competitor is starbucks and now mcdonalds is selling gourmet coffee.. i dont think he will make millions like he expects on his first year in business

Coffe with chocolate dipping – new idea?

I wanted to ask about a coffee shop I’ve seen in Philippine that offers unique idea of using chocolate by giving them hot, liquid, above candles, to dip small chocolate bars on it.

What is the name of that coffee shop? I remember it’s was a franchise of an Israeli company.

The decoration was so nice. They put chocolate everywhere. They even put chocolate barrels and chocolate pipes moving to those barrels. It was like a chocolate shop more than a coffee shop.

Just wanting some input from anyone with experience. I’m currently pursuing my BA in Business and really would like to own my own business. I recently started looking around and found a ton of companies offering franchising (extremely interested in the coffee shops, etc.).

Any advice/ideas/thoughts would be great!

I suggest you study and read about franchising, understanding what you need to do and how advantageous it really is compared to starting your own business. Also research about the field you want to enter and how you can compete in that particular market.

There is also the International Franchise Expo held once a year in Washington DC. franchise using your name?

There are two new coffee shops in Tyler, Tx., that are being franchised, named YAHOOZ, seems to me to be possible infringement on your name, yu ought to check it out, if anybody cares I can send photos, etc. They advertise the name big time. You can reach me at 903-780-2378 if anybody cares.

the big deal in trademark infringement is whether it create confusion in the consumer as to the source of the goods or services. If these coffee shops were more like an internet cafe, then that would increase the likelihood of an infringement.

Can a franchisor not give me a renewal option with no legal penalty?

hey friends.. I have a bit of complex question and i extremely need help with it.. i bought a franchise coffee shop 2.5yrs ago and i am running it ever since. when i purchased the existing business it had 2.5 yrs of lease plus a 5yr optional to renew, i am now at the 2.5yr mark and the franchisor is backing up not wanting to renew the lease with me or lanlord saying the rent is too high. i told them that i prefer to have the store with the same rent but not loose it and the landlord is ok with extending the lease with the same rent but the franchisor is saying they don’t wanna go ahead and agree. i paid almost my whole life savings when i wanted to buy this and i can not believe i am going to loose it despite the fact i still have a 5yr option to renew (and the landlors was ok to extend it for another 5yr optional) can they just decide they do not want to me there and go ahead with it? is it legal?

This is a question for the attorney who represented you at your time of purchase. If you did not have legal representation, find an attorney who specializes in this type of law ASAP.

I have opened a franchise coffee shop in goa and it doenst seem to give a good response though it was opened during the off season that is at the end or maech now i am worried? what do you think i should do? its regarding toasted subs and chillouts?

Cost of Goods Sold 4 a Coffee Shop/Cafe?

What is the average cost of goods sold for a small coffee shop, that sells some latte’s as well, small sweets, etc, non-franchise, about 700-1000 sqft. With sales of $1,000 a month including some light sandwiches, 80% coffee sold, 20% other sold (sandiwch, sweets, etc).

There’s no way to answer this question. The typical CGS for coffee drinks can vary anywhere from 10%-25% depending on the market. Typical CGS for sandwiches would be between 25% – 40%, depending on if you’re making them there vs. buying them, etc.

If you only plan to do sales of $1k/month your costs will be much higher. Even if you are open all 30 days in the month, that’s sales of less than $34 per day. 80% of that is $27. Starbucks charges between $3 & $5 for a good coffee. That’s roughly 6-7 drinks in a day. If you charge $3.50 for a sandwich, you’ll average 2 per day. Since you’ll be stocking many more than 2 sandwiches, you’ll be eating a lot of them, or throwing them out. That means that your costs will be MUCH higher.
