How start a coffee shop and be able to compete with Starbucks?
Anyone with experience is appreciated and if an owner has inputs.
Make great coffee….which may seem kind of obvious…but you’d be surprised how bad some start up places are.
Next…offer really tasty sweets and also healthy sandwiches to go with the coffee…
NEXT…offer "slushy" type cold drinks especially in the summertime…and finally…DON’T charge as much as starbucks!
A catchy name for the place doesn’t hurt as well as a marketing gimic like a cute logo or a mascot…And last but not least…If the product is good, access to the place is easy and the price is right…PEOPLE WILL COME BACK….BUT they have to know you exist….SO do mailings OFTEN…especially in the beginning to all the local people so THEY KNOW YOU ARE THERE!
.good Luck!

Not to put your hopes down, but Starbucks has been around for awhile. They are well known by people. So if you really want to open a coffee shop to compete with them, You need "GREAT" advertising. "GREAT" tasting coffee. And always "GREAT" Customer service. YOu want polite workers who don’t get fusterated and are hardworking. Trust me! You want a clean shop. Clean it "ALOT" during the day. I hope you do a "GREAT" job. Don’t give up. If this is your dream job or something, "Stick to it"! But most of all…."DON’T go BANKRUPT"! Lol.

Yea. what "ceasefear" said..and my dad had a great little place going for awhile, he’s just too old now and no energy for it. But make your prices lower, good coffee, and make it "quaint, with lots of other "goodies" for sale too, like a gift shop, maybe.

Competing against start bucks is gonna be heard. But i know for a fact many people who refuse to go to starbucks because they fell that starbucks over roasts there coffee beans to the point of tasting burnt, or people like my mom who prefers to work with the smaller independent coffee shops.

I think that there are two ways to achieve what you are talking about.
First of all, you need an incredibly convenient location. Second of all, you need to create an environment that people will like to spend time in. I would gladly visit a neat little cozy coffee shop over a Starbucks any day. As long as the products are comparable, I think that environment will take you a long way!

Give people what they want and how they want it:
-good coffee
-whatever flavor
-convenient location
-good atmosphere
-friendly environment
-at a good price
Remember in every Starbucks, you can order the exact same thing every time no matter where you are and get the exact same thing every time no matter where you are.
The people make the place and make people want to keep coming back to the place.
and last but not least, as Kevin Frieberg says "Don’t Hire people that Suck".
